Alright, so prolly it means the problem is the network... Anyway, if you want to use NoGhost mod, it is recommended (by Maverick, NoGhost's author) to run the server with 1.11... But a server for just you and a friend can run 1.16 I guess. From what you say, however, I might mean that the server sees you as a local client and that it floods the connection. (If so I dunno how to solve the problem). Also maybe try to increase the amount of memory the server uses by addind the followin in th ecommand line : "+set com_hunkmegs 56" where 56 means 56MB of memory reserved for the server. (56 is WAY too much for most servers, but you could try maybe 28 or even 56 to make sure that the memory ain't the problem).

how are the computers set up on the Lan mate, you using direct crossover cable r use a router? if use router have you allowed the services of quake on both computers as port forwarding? If you use a software firewall like outpost or zonealaram have you allowed quake on all services (access internet and trusted zone)?

Port forwarding should be in router configuration memory (myself I access the configuration interface using IE and a html-like screen).
Then you should just forward a few port, myself have set ports from 27960 to 27970. And you should forward these port towards the local IP of you server comp (should be 192.168.0.... or maybe 192.168.1....).

im starting to think the problem here is to do with the system or setup rather than the config. If you friend is connecting from his house then it is not a lan unless he is next door to you and shares your internet connection. This means you need to set up a full proper server, that i could access to, a public server. On your router port forward should be ok for quake normally. Silly question, but is your quake an original version or one dowloaded from the internet with a dodgy cd key? AS a second idea i would recommend a fresh install of quake to another folder (keep your original quake and create a new one in a different location so you have 2 quakes - 1 for your play and 1 for the server) and see if that makes any difference.

Yea, good points you made here TICKY.
Compulsive, to answer your question, just connect to your server typing the IP as usual, as it were a public server. This means the address of your router.
To be clearer and as I don't know your IPs, I'll use mines as an example : My IP (my router internet IP) : 81.56.56.168 My client game comp IP (local) : 192.168.0.3 My server comp IP (local) : 192.168.0.4
To connect to one of my servers, I type "/connect 81.56.56.168:27961", my request (from client to server) reaches the outter part of my router (the internet IP and port) then is redirected towards my server. I could prolly connect to 192.168.0.4:27961, but it wouldn't be much better (on a network point of view) and i twould prolly detect my client game as local, which would create problems (for example Q3 servers try to force the use of high network settings by clients connected over a LAN).

show ip shows your internal ip, thats the right one
lobos internal ip is 81.56.56.168 nearly all router ips are 192.168.0.0

But mate, you configured the port forwarding on your router, right ? (must say something like "applications on port 2760 to 27962 are redirected to 192.168.x.x, where this is IP of your server).
